Twitter for iPhone removes #dickbar

Twitter for iPhone has been updated and the much hated #dickbar Quick Bar has been removed. The intoduction of the Quick Bar infuriated many users, so this was a smart move by Twitter. In fact, many users sought out 3rd party Twitter applications to replace the official one. Were you one of those users? Will [...]

Insanely Popular Doodle Jump Adds Multiplayer [Blip]

It's the one iOS craze I've managed to avoid, so I must trust what I'm told about Doodle Jump: that it's fun. And moreover, that it's fun when playing two-player over Wi-Fi. But how could I ever possibly know?! [iTunes] More »

Complete Browser for webOS offers tabs, private browsing

If you use a webOS smartphone and want a more desktop-like browsing experience, head to the App Catalog and check out Complete Browser. The app builds on the default webOS browser core and provides a handful of useful additional features like tabbed browsing, a private browsing mode, and easy access to clearing browsing data. There's also an anonymized Google search option built in.

The tabs give the app a somewhat non-webOS feel, and we quite like flicking through browser windows using the cards interface. Still, for 99 cents the privacy features alone might be enough to justify purchasing Complete Browser.

Devs Grapple for WWDC Tix as Prices Skyrocket

Tickets to Apple's World Wide Developer Conference, to be held in San Francisco in June, are hot. Some would-be attendees seem to be willing to pay thousands to get in on the event -- a quick search on eBay showed tickets being offered at prices ranging from $1,600 to $4,500 each. Many of them had multiple bids. What would be worth $4,500 to an app developer?

Japan?s SoftBank To Offer Free Phones, Waive All Communication Fees For Quake Orphans

Japan's telecommunications juggernaut SoftBank, the third largest mobile carrier of the country, had to register quite a lot of damage after the big earthquake that hit Japan on March 11. 3,800 of SoftBank's base stations were knocked out, meaning no customer in the affected areas could make or receive calls via cell phones (the situation was similar with other carriers). But it turned out that this damage wasn't the main concern of SoftBank's president and founder Masayoshi Son (pictured above). After visiting Fukushima Governor Yuhei Sato in his prefecture on March 22 and seeing the real damage done, Son promised his company will offer free cell phones to all children who became orphans due to the earthquake.

Crapgadget: 'blurring the line between comical and offensive' edition

Just because the flow of Crapgadgets has apparently slowed from an outpouring to a mere flood doesn't mean we haven't been dutifully collecting the worst of the bad over the past few months. Without further ado, we present to you the latest edition, complete with a handful of this quarter's most atrocious / splendiferous gadgets. Frankly, it's a chore just deciding where to start -- should we extol the portable speaker kit with an utterly unnecessary Core i5 label on the outside, or give priority to Thanko's heated mousepad / hand-engulfing cat face? On second thought, maybe it's the real wood stick-on that enables every smartphone owner to literally knock on wood whenever the mood strikes. Unfortunately for us, there's also an iPhone 4 steering wheel to consider, not to mention a stick figure speaker with a questionable audio jack and a retrofied telephone with an integrated reading light. Have a peek at each below, and let us know in the poll below which is most abhorrent. And remember, honesty really is the best policy.

Read - Portable speaker kit, Core i5-powered!
Read - Audiobot, who could use a zippered fly
Read - Thanko's cat face / mousepad / warmer
Read - Knock On Wood iPhone stick-on
Read - iPhone 4 steering wheel (with speakers!)
Read - USB retro telephone (with alarm clock!)

Data Caps Claim a Victim: Netflix Cuts Streaming Video Quality

By Nate Anderson, Ars Technica
Netflix announced last night that Canadian users will, by default, receive lower-quality?and lower-bandwidth?streaming video. The change was made to protect users, “because many Canadian Internet service providers unfortunately enforce monthly caps on the total amount of data consumed.”
Fast Internet connections could previously chew through 30-70GB of data while streaming 30 hours [...]

Sony Ericsson will let you unlock the bootloader on new Xperia Android phones -- subject to conditions

While one group of Android phone makers is swinging towards locking their hardware down, Sony Ericsson is resolutely headed in the other direction. The Swedo-Japanese consortium has just announced it will provide a secure and legal way for eager Android hackers to gain full control of the bootloader on some of its upcoming 2011 Xperia line of phones. All four models are covered, the Xperia Play, Neo, Pro, and Arc, however you have to make sure you buy a handset that isn't SIM-locked to a carrier and then there are territorial considerations to take into account. Warranties may still be voided by fooling around with your Xperia's software (again, depends on individual handsets and markets) and SE warns gravely of the potential for "physical injuries or material damage" if you freak your Android into overheating or worse. So proceed with caution, but know that Sony Ericsson is by your side*.

* Subject to terms and conditions, repair charges may be incurred, Android upgrades are promised but never guaranteed.

MiKandi announces in-app billing

MiKandi

MiKandi, Android's unoffical porn store and one of several alternatives to the Android Market, announced today that they have enabled in-app billing support for their app store.  The new method is powered by "MiKandi Gold," their virtual currency system and developers will have the flexibility to charge between a penny and $50 for content.

MiKandi turned heads when launched, in part from a maniacal rant about porn on Android by none other than Steve Jobs.  From humble beginnings to over 500,000 downloads per month and support from 1,300 developers, MiKandi has shown that many appreciate uncensored content on their Android phones. See MiKandi's full press release after the break.

Sony and LG price a swath of 3D HDTVs

We're still waiting on LG's ginormous 72-inch LZ7900 to make its debut on store shelves, but the rest of CES's primo 3DTV crop is rearing to ride out, with Sony's HX929, HX820 and HX720 series of LED-backlit LCD screens and LG's Infinia PZ750 plasmas now priced at Amazon. 3D-Display-info.com found Sony's locally-dimmed Bravia sets starting at $2,099 for a 46-inch HX720 with Gorilla Glass protection, all the way up to $3,799 for the premium 55-inch XBR-55HX929 with a full-array LED backlight. Meanwhile, the 50-inch LG PZ750 (with Smart TV, naturally) starts out at $1,599, while a 60-inch version of the same thing will run $2,199. Which one fits best in your den? That depends on a number of things, but we will add that the Sony sets are merely up for pre-order, while the LG units are listed as shipping within a matter of weeks.
